Romania and Bulgaria to cooperate in preparing their mandates at the helm of the Council of the European Union

Vice Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu discussed today at the Victoria Palace with the Minister for the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Lilyana Pavlova, about the cooperation opportunities between Romania and Bulgaria.

The topic was approached included from the angle of Bulgaria taking over of the presidency of the Council of the EU in the first semester of 2018 and Romania in the first semester of 2019. Moreover, there were mentioned projects which the two countries could develop together at economic level and in the energy field, and which could be included on the agenda of the next Romania-Bulgaria inter-governmental meeting that is scheduled to be held this autumn in Varna. Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu also attended this meeting.

"The cooperation between Romania and Bulgaria, and the good preparation for taking over our first mandates at the helm of the Council of the EU represent important opportunities for both countries, and it only depends on us to be able to capitalize on these chances," stated Vice Prime Minister Ciolacu.

In his turn, Lilyana Pavlova appreciated the fact that Romania is very active in preparing its mandate as president of the Council of the EU. Considering that Bulgaria will take over this responsibility one year before Romania, the Bulgarian official expressed her country’s readiness to share the expertise acquired so far.

"Bulgaria is prepared, at this hour, to exercise this mandate and I assure you of our entire support for the preparation of your own mandate," stated the Minister for the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Lilyana Pavlova, showing that some of her country's priorities will remain of current interest during Romania's presidency too, like the Danube Strategy, the European perspective on Western Balkans, the next EU multiannual financial framework, with an emphasis on the cohesion policy, and the EU policy regarding the migration phenomenon.
