Dear guests,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to Romania! Your presence here, for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the government –owned DP World and the Transport Ministry of Romania is a clear proof of the friendship binding us and also an extremely important moment for both states.

Today, we are paving the way for a more extensive collaboration in the field of transport and transport infrastructure, in the context of signing in early February 2019 of the long –term concession agreement for the operation of Constanta Container Terminal. Your expertise in this field will surely be an essential factor from now on.

The Constanta Port has a major importance for us. It has a strategic position and a huge potential which unfortunately has not been capitalized so far at the level it should have been. We sought through our programme for government that Constanta Port becomes a regional port. This is why any investment is much than welcome. It is essential for this area to become dynamic and acquire the place it deserves at international level.

We are interested in a substantial presence of Emirati companies in this sector, and we encourage UAE businesspeople to invest in Romania.

Romania enjoys a long cooperation tradition with the United Arab Emirates that is our country’s main trade partner in the Gulf area. I deem we are in an important stage of strengthening bilateral cooperation, reflected in both states’ openness and firm political will to foster dialogue on all levels of interest.

During my working visit to the United Arab Emirates in October 2018, the Romanian and the Emirati authorities jointly agreed to establish a tighter and more active framework for cooperation and coordination at the government level, and they thus agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to strategic economic partnership.

To this end, “A Joint Statement on Establishing a Strategic Economic Partnership between the Government of Romania and the Government of the United Arab Emirates” was adopted. We thus paved the way for important cooperation opportunities in the economic field. The signing of this Statement represented an essential moment in Romanian –Emirati relations, creating the basis for future consolidation of cooperation in all identified areas of common interest.

In this context, I reconfirm the Bucharest Government’s support for strengthening the relations between the two states’ business sectors, and point out that Romania has an attractive business environment that has been improved through legislative changes, such as those made to the public-private partnership law.

I voice hope that an increasing number of UAE companies will be encouraged by the example of DP World and they will invest in Romania, in various sectors of interest.

Thank you!
