Prime Minister Viorica Dancila met with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Jean –Yves Le Drian

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila received today the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Jean –Yves Le Drian who is paying a visit to Bucharest.

The French official’s visit takes place 11 years on from the last visit of the French Foreign Minister to Romania and in a year with multiple significances for the bilateral relationship: 10- year anniversary of the signing of the Strategic Partnership Declaration, preparation of Romania –France Season, a large-scale cultural and diplomacy public project that will run between December 1, 2018 and July 14, 2019, overlapping Romania’s first term at the helm of the Council of the EU, as well as the celebration of the Centenary of the Greater Union, to which France made a significant contribution.

During the meeting, the Romanian Prime Minister hailed the privileged bilateral relationship between Romania and France in the context of the special dynamics this year of the political dialogue at all levels, and expressed the wish to deepen the Romanian-French cooperation, including by updating the Strategic Partnership Roadmap, with a view to signing it on the occasion of the Romanian Prime Minister’s visit to Paris at the end of this year.

The very good development of bilateral economic exchanges, which exceeded EUR 8 billion in 2017, was also hailed. The Head of the Executive noted the important size of French investments in Romania and voiced Romania’s interest and openness to attract new French capital investment and to diversify economic cooperation.

As regards the European agenda, Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă reiterated Romania's interest in cooperating closely with France and other European partners to strengthen the unity and cohesion of the European Union, as well as in the light of Romania’s taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2019.

Prime Minister also reiterated the special importance that the Romanian Government attaches to the objective of Romania’s accession to Schengen, outlining the substantial contribution that our country can make to EU internal security.

During the talks, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila highlighted Romania’s objective to join the OECD , outlining that all the evaluation criteria are met, and voicing hope for a political decision being made in the shortest time possible.

Other topic on the discussion agenda was the francophony, the Romanian Prime Minister outlining Romania’s role as beacon state of the Francophony in the region and the interest to promote French as an investment in the professional future of the young generation.
