Prime Minister Viorica Dancila participated in consultations with President Klaus Iohannis on matters of foreign policy

Today, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila attended consultations with President Klaus Iohannis on foreign policy matters, developments in Middle East, including the issue of the relocation to Jerusalem of Romania’s Embassy in the State of Israel.

On this occasion, the Romanian Prime Minister stated that as Head of the Executive, with the main responsibility in the implementation of the Programme for Government, including the foreign policy chapter, has as main objective to back Romania’s interests, and identify the best ways to consolidate Romania’s role and profile on the international stage. Prime Minister outlined that launching an analysis and evaluation process on the possibility of relocating Romania’s Embassy in the State of Israel is designed to support the above –mentioned objectives, in a moment when the United States, Romania’s main ally and strategic partner took this decision, and several states are analyzing this proposal.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila also highlighted that the main element underpinning this analysis is the principled position, which Romania constantly supported, regarding the two-state solution: Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition.

Moreover, Prime Minister reminded that Romania’s recent démarche at the EU, aimed at the reconfirmation of the common commitment to a peace solution to consecrate the existence of two states: Israel and Palestine, and to avoid any unilateral measures that would have the potential to compromise the peace process.

The elements proposed by Romania were thus in line with the terminology and the conclusions adopted by the European Council on December 14, 2017 and in full agreement with the official position endorsed at national level, including by the President of Romania.

The Romanian Prime Minister recalled Romania's commitment to backing the international community’s efforts towards addressing the challenges facing the particularly complicated regional context.

"To manage all these challenges as efficiently as possible, a moderate and balanced position needs to be adopted by all the actors involved, and at national level, my presence today at the Cotroceni Palace, is proof of the real support this commitment enjoys, and of the desire of continuity in the field of foreign policy”, Prime Minister stated at the end of the meeting with President Klaus Iohannis.
