Prime Minister Viorica Dancila: We are committed to ensuring an efficient and pragmatic presidency of the Council of the European Union

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila welcomed on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at Victoria Palace, the Secretary –General of the European Commission Martin Selmayr and Clara Martinez Alberola, Head of Cabinet to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.

The senior European officials are in Bucharest, on a visit which is traditionally paid to the Member State that is preparing to take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. The visit is part of the Romanian Government’s dense calendar of dialogue with its European partners, Member States or European institutions, in the second semester of this year.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila reviewed the advanced state of the internal preparedness process of the future Presidency of the Council of the European Union which Romania will exercise in the first six months of next year, and voiced appreciation for the support granted by the European Commission. On this occasion, the Head of the Executive reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to ensure an efficient and pragmatic Presidency of the Council of the European Union, capable of responding to the challenges the Union is facing in this period. Prime Minister Viorica Dancila reminded the objective undertaken by Romania, to put the European citizen at the forefront of its activity, during its presidency of the Council of the European Union, in a coherent effort to meet, through the results we will obtain, the expectations of over 500 million EU inhabitants. Prime Minister also underlined the need of maintaining the unity of member states, idea which can also be found in the motto of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU: "Cohesion, a common European value”.

During the talks, the particular context in which Romania will exercise its mandate, was evoked, the dynamic of which will be marked by the debate on the future of Europe, the organization of elections for the European Parliament in May 2019, Great Britain’s exit from the European Union, and the negotiations on the new multiannual financial framework.

During the meeting, the Secretary –General of the European Commission Martin Selmayr and Clara Martinez Alberola, Head of Cabinet to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker voiced appreciation for the preparations made at Government level to takeover and exercise the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Prime Minister’s meeting with the senior European officials was followed by a meeting of the Cabinet members, on the preparation of Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union to which the European officials were invited to participate. During this meeting and throughout the talks which followed as part of the series of separate meetings of the European Commission’s representatives with some of the Romanian Cabinet members, the main European dossiers were addressed, which will be found on the agenda of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
