Bridge over Danube, at Zimnicea -Svishtov will be achieved in public –private partnership

18 April

The Government has approved on today’s meeting a Memorandum on building the Bridge over Danube, at Zimnicea –Svishtov, a project discussed by the two Prime Ministers and within the quadrilateral meeting of March 29, held in Snagov.

This large - scale project is necessary as the traffic between Romania and Bulgaria intensified following the development of trade and transit traffic, and in the current conditions of the cross-border infrastructure, crossing Danube is taking place with difficulty.

The solution put forward to attain this objective is that of the public –private partnership. The bridge over Danube, at Zimnicea –Svishtov correlates with other objectives of investment infrastructure proposed to be achieved in public –private partnership, in the south area of Romania, respectively once with Bucharest –Alexandria – Craiova –Drobeta Turnu Severin – Lugoj Highway, and at the level of region Romania – Bulgaria.

The project will contribute to achieving some transit corridors for the road traffic, ensuring the connection between Central and Northern Europe with the South area of Europe, respectively Turkey, Greece, Albania through Romania and Bulgaria.

Considering the various legal provisions, the investment objective can be achieved through unitary, distinct coordination, on the soil of each state. It is worth mentioning that in line with other normative act adopted by the Government, the Government Decision no. 643/ 2018, among the public –private partnership projects, is also „The Turnu Magurele -Nicopole hydrotechnical complex” on the Danube, complementary project which stipulates achieving a road and railway connection between the two riparian countries.

The Transport Ministry and the National Strategy and Prognosis Committee (CNSP) will urgently take legislative and organizational steps for the priority implementation of the project” Bridge over Danube” at Zimnicea -Svishtov .
