Message from Prime Minister Ludovic Orban on the passing of the writer Paul Goma

I received the sad news of the passing of one of the great anti-communist dissidents of Romania.

Paul Goma was a survivor. In his youth, he survived the extermination regime in the Jilava and Gherla communist prisons, then in the forced domicile in Bărăgan. In his adulthood, he faced the attacks ordered against him by Nicolae Ceaușescu himself and the persecutions to which he was subjected by the Securitate, then he withstood a long exile as a person deprived of citizenship. Today he was killed by the unseen and cruel enemy that threatens humanity. When the Revolution was still far away and Communism seemed unstoppable, Paul Goma almost by himself managed to wake us up and call us into battle. He will always remain for us the voice that called for the Ceausescu regime to observe human rights, a name that in last decades of communism revived hope and strengthened resilience in our souls. God rest his soul!
