Press statement by Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă regarding the measures to counter the effects of the price hikes

"We are going through a complicated period, marked by multiple crises, which require effective decisions and measures to counter the price hikes.

In this respect, I discussed with the Minister of Finance, who is in Brussels and is discussing with European counterparts from ECOFIN, to find solid measures at the level of the European Union for the economic support of member states.

We already have a mechanism that worked during the pandemic period and could be extended and even developed in the context of other crises that we are currently facing.

Romania will request reallocation of unspent funds from previous European programs, intended for the Romanian economy, to be able to intervene in support of the business sector, Romanian enterprises.

This package needs to cope with the challenges on the European market and to guarantee continuity, stability and predictability, for both the business sector, as well as for the population.

This week, the Government will adopt nationwide the package of measures to reduce the pressure of the energy and natural gas bills. We will intervene in support of the Romanian economy through a set of solutions that include caps and compensations on the electricity and natural gas prices for one year, as of April 1.

For consumption of up to 100 kWh per month, Romanians will pay 0.68 RON/kWh, and for a consumption comprised between 100 and 300 kWh they will pay 0.8 RON/kWh.

Regarding gas, the price for households will be 0.31 RON/kWh. Except for large consumers, which will have dedicated packages of state aid, all Romanian companies will benefit from a fixed electricity price of 1 RON per kWh, VAT included, and 0.37 RON/kWh for gas, VAT included.

We are in talks with the European Commission to continue granting, this year too, support to large consumers, such as chemical plants or those in the raw materials manufacturing industry.

The measures that we will take will protect the population and economy, preventing the risks of an accentuated rise in prices and inflation. The Government stands with citizens and the business sector, to protect jobs and economic stability.

I am in permanent contact with the Minister of Agriculture and Romanian food producers, the representatives of large retail networks. Romania is well supplied, our stocks ensure all the goods that we need. Our farmers enjoy all the support of the Government to prepare this agricultural year".
