Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş discussed with Chancellor Angela Merkel about Romania's priorities this year and the topical issues on the European agenda

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos paid today an official visit to Germany, on which occasion he attended the working lunch offered by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Head of the Executive also discussed with the German counterpart about the Romanian Government's priorities for this year: the Government’s reform and efficiency, vision of long-term economic development, and legislative, fiscal and financial predictability. All these, together with the high rate of economic growth of Romania, provide opportunities for German investors in Romania.

During the meeting with the Federal Chancellor, Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş stated that the first foreign visit of his term as prime minister is in Germany in order to give a signal regarding the importance of the Romanian-German relationship: "We want to re-launch the cooperation agenda of joint projects" Head of Government explained.

Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş outlined the important role of the German minority in Romania and of the Romanian community in Germany and announced that he would make another visit with predominantly economic character, to Germany this spring.

Regarding current issues on the European agenda, Prime Minister outlined the Government's willingness to make Romania a proactive Member State, relying including on the very good bilateral relation with Germany.

An important topic on the meeting agenda was Romania’s prospect to join Schengen area. Prime Minister Cioloş recalled that our country has already met the technical membership conditions and it wants a solid and credible Schengen area. Romania is already acting as a responsible Schengen Member State regarding the border control, the Prime Minister added.

In this context, the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Romania took several measures to secure external borders and for combating corruption and expects such progress to be reflected in the next MCV report of the European Commission.

Regarding migration, Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş pronounced in Berlin in favor of continuing the dialogue to find a solution that meets the expectations of both Romania and the other Member States.

Also, the Head of the Government stated that on the discussions agenda, there were topics related to regional policy and the EU's Eastern neighborhood. Romania further backs a European way for the Republic of Moldova.

During the official visit, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos had a meeting with Stanislav Tillich, President of the Bundesrat, in which he said that Romania wants to benefit from the development expertise of the lands in Eastern Germany. The Head of the Executive met with Karl-Heinz Brunner, Rainer Arnold, Christoph Bergner, Ute Vogt, Patrick Sensburg, representatives of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Bundestag. German MPs were interested by the economic dimension of the Romanian-German relations, and the enforcement of dual education system, how the Romanians in diaspora can exercise their right to vote and to continue the fight against corruption.

Also, the Prime Minister and the Ambassador of Romania in Berlin, Emil Hurezeanu discussed with representatives of the Romanian community in Germany. Prime Minister stated that Romanians in Germany are "known and recognized" as a well-integrated community, adding that the way Romanian communities are perceived by the Member States contributes to Romania's image in the Union. During the meeting, the Romanians who live and work in Germany gave Prime Minister books and albums. At the same time, the Romanian Ambassador outlined the importance of official visit of the Romanian Prime Minister to Berlin for bilateral relations and for the Romanian community in this country.
