Prime Minister has met with the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden

On October 21-23, Prime Minister Victor Ponta paid an official working visit to the United States of America. The Romanian delegation headed by Prime Minister was comprised of: Minister of Energy, Constantin Nita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean, Education Minister Remus Pricopie and Environment Minister Rovana Plumb. The aim of this visit had both a political component and an economic component.

,, Our objectives are reaffirmation of our strategic political and military partnership, and cooperation prospects in the near future, also the economic partnership – as the visit will have an important economic component, namely meetings with representatives of the major companies that have already invested in Romania or possibly have investment plans, I mean the three important areas: the energy, the IT and modern equipment and technologies industry. We will also have meetings with those representatives in Congress who are directly in charge of amending legislation to allow in the future, the inclusion of Romania in the Visa Waiver Program", Prime Minister has stated before his leaving to US.

On the first day of his visit to Washington, the Romanian Prime Minister had several meetings with representatives of major companies that have already invested in Romania or have investment plans , such as Motorola , HP, ExxonMobil , Chevron and IBM.

"There are two areas in which our strategic partnership works flawlessly. I am content with the economic area. U.S. is not currently in the top 10 trading partners or investors in Romania. And I think that based on the excellent political and military relations, we need to do much more. Therefore, my first day of meetings pertained to the economic area, “Prime Minister Victor Ponta stated.

On the second day of his visit to the United States, the Head of Bucharest Executive was received at the White House by Vice President Joe Biden .

U.S. official thanked Prime Minister Victor Ponta for the support that Romania extended to the U.S. on a number of regional issues , including Afghanistan , saying " the unwavering devotion of Romania as a bilateral partner and NATO ally led to the consolidation of the regional and international security " and reaffirming the U.S strong commitment for a strategic Partnership with Romania .

"The message was very clear: count on the U.S., but be strong yourself, be strong primarily economically. It was a saying: democracy is successful only if the economy succeeds, "said PM Victor Ponta after meeting with U.S. Vice President .

The same day Romanian Prime Minister had a meeting with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim. Following this, Romania gained access to a type of credit of one billion dollars yearly, returnable in seven years at an interest rate similar to that of Germany.

On the last day of his visit, Prime Minister Victor Ponta had scheduled discussions with members of US Congress about the need to eliminate U.S. visas for Romanians and our country's inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program.

Following the visit of Romanian Prime Minister to the U.S. , the first positive signals come even from the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest.

"We are delighted by the meetings that Romanian Prime Minister  had and will have in Washington ( ... ) we need Romania to be a strong country ," Duane C. Butcher , Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, stated for public television.
