Prime Minister Ludovic Orban’s meeting with the European Parliament President David Maria Sassoli

Prime Minister Ludovic Orban had today in Brussels a meeting with the European Parliament President David Sassoli. The talks occasioned a substantial exchange of opinions on the main topics on the European agenda, such as negotiations for the future EU budget and climate change/ the European Green Deal.

The Romanian Prime Minister reaffirmed Romania’s firm and clear commitment to further acting as a loyal partner, deeply attached to the European project, as well the Romanian Government’s interest to have an open, direct and substantial dialogue with all European institutions. Prime Minister also expressed Romania’s interest to play an active and decisive role in the Brussels decision –making processes, in the context in which both as Member State and during its mandate of EU Council Presidency, Romania proved it can contribute with constructive solutions to the European agenda advancement.

Given the good cooperation with the European Parliament, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban welcomed the European Parliament’s Resolution of December 2019, on the 30th anniversary of the Romanian Revolution of December 1989.

In his turn, the European Parliament President David Sassoli highlighted that Romania is a very important state for the European Union due to its political weight, its belonging to the Western culture and its geopolitical relevance.

In the context of the challenges at European level, the discussions revealed the need for joint, concerted action, to capitalize on the EU advantages, and find solutions to the current issues for a stronger, more united, safer Europe, closer to its citizens.

Regarding the multiannual financial framework, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban requested the support of the European Parliament for an ambitious budget of the Union and the support for traditional policies, the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, with direct impact on citizens and on meeting the convergence objective at the EU level.

Regarding the European Green Deal, the Romanian Prime Minister highlighted the importance of ensuring a just and fair transition, at European level and at the level of each EU Member State. Prime Minister Ludovic Orban outlined that from Romania’s perspective, it is necessary that the new proposals be accompanied by adequate support mechanisms and instruments for the Member States, especially for the most exposed.

Prime Minister Ludovic Orban reiterated the importance of Romania’s objective of accession to Schengen area, objective strongly endorsed by the European Parliament, President Sassoli arguing that Romania’s accession is to the benefit of the entire Union.

Prime Minister Ludovic Orban and European Parliament President Sassoli expressed a common vision regarding the support for the EU enlargement policy, highlighting the importance of a decision as soon as possible on the opening of the accession negotiations with Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia.
