Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă met with healthcare specialists at myocardial infarction centres and stroke centres

[check against delivery]

Nicolae Ciucă: Good afternoon! Minister, presidential advisor, doctors, thank you very much for having honoured our invitation to hold a discussion over a project discussed together with Minister Rafila, his team, with the Prime Minister’s team of advisors, and I consider it is time to move on from analysis and planning to concrete action.

In today’s Cabinet meeting, we approved a Government Decision establishing diagnosis and treatment centres at the level of hospitals, throughout the country. We have some figures, Mr Minister has estimated them to be over 230 centres. All these centres will become operational, and hopefully, this happens as soon as possible, depending also on the involvement of relevant decision-makers, these centres will be as effective as possible. Basically, it is about the raft of measures designed at the level of the Health Ministry that will allow us to increase our COVID-19 treatment capacity and, at the same time, carry out this activity of focusing our attention on the treatment of patients suffering, unfortunately, from other illnesses.

What we designed today refers to two specific issues: treatment of myocardial infarction and stroke. Unfortunately, the statistics, you know very well the matter, thus, I will not address it, is not at all encouraging.

Romania ranks last in terms of the ability to treat myocardial infarction and stroke and through the programme, we propose at the level of the Health Ministry, and of course, through the support, that the Government will extend for this programme to be carried out, we intend – and I am sure that through all your knowledge and dedication, we will implement these programmes as soon as possible. Surely, this myocardial infarction programme exists at present but it is under-represented locally. As far as I know from Health Minister Rafila, the technical support is in place and also the necessary human resources, which, with a few elements of specific training, may be able to take over these cases and let's start a matching programme for treating strokes. I very much believe in the Ministry of Health's team power to mobilise and find the necessary solutions to cover the entire country evenly, finding initially regional solutions, and afterwards,  we will proceed with their extension to as many locations as possible. Thank you for your attendance.
