Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă met with international and European athletics representatives

Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă: Major sports events hosted by Romania give us the opportunity of promoting sports and new great careers in the field

Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă received the President of the European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov and the European Athletics Director-General Christian Milz at Victoria Palace.

The meeting was also attended by the honorary advisor to the Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Popescu and the president of the Romanian Athletics Federation Anişoara Cuşmir – Stanciu.

The dialogue focused on Romania organizing the European Athletics Championships U 20 – Cadets in Cluj – Napoca next year. In this context, Prime Minister highlighted the opportunity this important competition represents in encouraging young people to practice sports, and strive for great performance.

“Romania enjoys the international recognition of the results of our athletes throughout history. It is important for the young generation to know and be inspired by the models offered by our golden athletes, such as the president of the Romanian Athletics Federation Anişoara Cuşmir – Stanciu, Olympic champion in 1984 in the long jump and holder of four world records. The major competitions we host give us the opportunity of promoting sports and generating new great careers. The Romanian Government extends its full support to this European sports event and will be further actively engaged in the good organization of major competitions hosted by our country", stated Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă.

The President of the European Athletics thanked Romania for the efforts to organize in the best conditions the Balkan Athletics Championship from Craiova that closed last week.

At the same time, our country’s initiative to take the responsibility of organizing the European Cadet Championship has been praised. In this respect, Cluj-Napoca offers all the necessary infrastructure to standards required by this competitive level. More than 2,000 participants and members of technical staff from 49 countries will be for six days in Cluj-Napoca.  The European Broadcasting Union network will broadcast the championship to approximately 70 television channels.
