Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă met with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez

Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă had today, March 17, 2022, a meeting with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, on his first visit to Romania, in this capacity.

The two officials mainly addressed the multidimensional impact of the crisis in Ukraine, with emphasis on issues related to stability, refugees and energy. The common outlook on the Romania –Spain close bilateral cooperation, enhanced by the contribution of the significant Romanian community living in the Kingdom of Spain, has also been underscored on this occasion.

The two Heads of government confirmed the need for a European solution to reform the energy market as well as to respond to the needs of the refugees from Ukraine. Both the Romanian Prime Minister and his Spanish counterpart hailed the cohesive response of both EU and NATO to the crisis in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of solidarity with front-line countries in terms of refugees influxes management.

In this context, Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă presented the measures taken by our country to support the refugees and hailed the involvement of Spanish nongovernmental organizations in the steps to protect those in need.

In addition to Romania’s action, the special efforts of the Republic of Moldova which received the highest number of refugees compared with its population, have also been appreciated.

In parallel, Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă presented the measures envisaged as a part of the new scheme on capping the natural gas and energy prices.

During the dialogue, the Romanian Prime Minister also voiced interest in holding the first joint session of the two governments to maximize bilateral cooperation.

The Spanish Prime Minister hailed the relationship between the two states, especially the bridge created by the Romanian community in Spain and reiterated the interest to further develop and strengthen bilateral relations. At the same time, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez thanked for Romanian people’s reaction and solidarity, further offering Spain’s support as part of the European efforts to assist the refugees from Ukraine.

In the discussion with the Spanish counterpart, Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă emphasized the urgent need for European and bilateral support for the Republic of Moldova, which is much affected by the multiple challenges posed by the conflict in Ukraine. On this occasion, the Spanish Prime Minister expressed his desire to further support the Republic of Moldova.
