Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă: Madam mayor, madam vice-mayor, Your Excellencies, Your Excellency, Madam Ambassador, Member of the Chamber of Deputies, chairman of the Friendship Group with Romania in the Great Assembly, Secretary of State Luca Niculescu, dear Romanian MPs, Romanian citizens participating in this event,

I am highly honored to participate today in the inauguration of the George Enescu Square in the 9th Arrondissement, where our illustrious composer George Enescu liked so much to live and create. I want to thank you for the decision made by the Mayor of the 9th Arrondissement, Madam Deputy Mayor who took care of the architecture of everything that meant the process of granting the name of this square.

I also want to thank the chairman of the Friendship Group with Romania in the Great Assembly. Last but not least, I want to thank the Secretary of State Luca Niculescu who, during his tenure as Ambassador in Paris, initiated the demarches for us to enjoy now the honor of inaugurating the George Enescu Square. I also thank the Embassy staff who maintained close contact with French authorities, especially the city hall of the 9th Arrondissement.

It is a gesture of recognition for the creation of our illustrious composer George Enescu, who lived and created here the Romanian rhapsodies, in the 9th Arrondissement. It is also a gesture of recognition of the cultural relations existing between Romania and France and also a moment when we have to underscore that the Romanian-French friendship is not only a model for what our countries currently stand for, in the European Union but has historic roots.

I am convinced that the Romanians who work, live, and study, today, in Paris, will be glad and proud to pass through George Enescu Square and bring to mind what he used to share with the people he met, with the ones who collaborated at that time. ‘People need to know my country as it is. Everywhere I go, I don’t forget that this is my first duty,' said George Enescu when meeting those who did not know Romania.

Both the mayor and the vice-mayor talked about the relations existing between France and Romania, and the twinning relations between various municipalities from Romania and France. This shows the friendship relations and I think it is very important to underline that not long time ago, I had the honor of hosting the French president’s visit to Romania. The visit took place at a moment when France took a very important decision, taking over the responsibility as a framework –nation for a NATO battlegroup deployed in Romania. This is not an appropriate moment to talk about our bilateral defense cooperation and measures but I wanted to link this aspect of what George Enescu said when talking about how he served his country: "I served my country with my weapons: quill pen, violin, and baton." It is good at such times to remember that there are such "weapons" at hand with which we can serve our country, as our illustrious predecessors did.

Thank once again to all those who got involved in this endeavor, so that today we can enjoy the inauguration of George Enescu Square, I also want to thank the Romanians who study, work, and participate in the cultural life of Paris! And because the winter holidays and Christmas are approaching, I want to tell them that we are waiting for them at home and to celebrate the holidays together.  I thank once again our hosts today, and our friends in Paris and France, wishing them happy holidays! Thank you!
