Prime Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă welcomes the creation of the joint special committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to support Romania's accession process to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The establishment of the OECD Special Parliamentary Committee denotes the cross-party commitment of the Romanian Parliament to our country's OECD accession process while enhancing its role in one of Romania's current main strategic steps internationally.
The Parliament is an important actor in the OECD accession process, with an essential role in obtaining the Organization's membership status. After submitting the Initial Memorandum on December 15, 2022, Romania entered the technical stage of the process, which involves in-depth evaluations by the 26 OECD sectoral Committees covering almost all public policy areas: capital markets, investments, social affairs, competition, public and corporate governance, integrity and transparency, taxation, trade, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, etc.
The Parliament of Romania, as the sole legislative authority of the country, can act, including based on the legislative initiative of the members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, as a promoter of the development of the normative-legislative framework necessary for Romania's accession to the OECD, respectively as a facilitator of the public debate in areas relevant to the OECD accession process.
The Romanian Government expresses its readiness to cooperate with the OECD Special Parliamentary Committee and support public debate on this subject. This will lead to enhanced dialogue between the Executive and the Parliament in favor of good governance and the interests of the citizens, and to strengthening Romania's global efforts in the accession process.
