Mr President of Romania,

Ministers

Commander, Director General,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we celebrate 100 years since the establishment of the Cantacuzino Institute, an elite Romanian institution, which has distinguished itself as a successful brand in the world of research.

Remarkable scientific discoveries at the international level and tireless research of passionate specialists have been the Cantacuzino Institute's mainstay during extremely difficult times. I do not necessarily refer to the period prior to 1989, but also to what happened afterwards, when underfunding, frequent managerial changes and political interference have pushed this leading research institution on the verge of collapse. It is a lesson we must not forget!

The special efforts in recent years have saved the Cantacuzino Institute and made possible the continuation of researches and relaunch of the manufacturing of organic products, the business card which made it famous.

Last year, despite the pandemic difficulties, the institute's specialists managed to put the equipment back into operation, check the entire technological flow and produce the first non-commercial doses of trivalent influenza vaccine. There are very good premises that a safe and beneficial product for Romanians will be manufactured on a large scale at Cantacuzino Institute.

The Cantacuzino Institute has played a vital role in the joint effort to protect the health of citizens since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was and continues to be at the forefront of the fight against the novel coronavirus through the tests performed, also through valuable studies on the transmission of COVID-19 infection. For the first time in Romania, it did virus genome sequencing.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have great respect for the history of the Cantacuzino Institute and I believe in its future and that of Romanian research.

As Prime Minister, I will continue to fully support the institute's projects and initiatives.

But beyond providing the necessary resources, I believe that the most important support that the Government can grant to the Cantacuzino specialists is to let them do their job. Not to hinder them with political decisions, and not to forget the lesson of the past!

The Cantacuzino Institute will remain at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic, both in terms of what it is currently doing, but also in terms of its capacity and expertise within the European mechanism of increasing the COVID-19 vaccine production capacity.

I pass on my congratulations to the specialists for their remarkable achievements, for the continuation of tradition in Romanian research!

I wish a lot of success to those who protect Romania's health through their work and researches!

Happy anniversary to the Cantacuzino Institute and as many successful projects as possible!
